EIGHT & BOB

EIGHT & BOB

Albert Fouquet, the son of a Parisian aristocrat, was part of elite French society in the early twentieth century and a perfume connoisseur. In a room on the upper floor of the family chateau, Fouquet created and perfected various essences for his own personal use – aided by Philippe, the family butler. The hand-crafted fragrance spread to the US after being worn by John F Kennedy, who had met Albert while on vacation on the French Riviera in 1937. Captivated by the scent, he wrote Albert upon his return to the States asking for more bottles, requesting that Albert send him eight samples, “and if your production allows, another one for Bob”. He didn’t fill the order until Philippe found some beautiful glass bottles in a Parisian pharmacy that Albert considered suitable for his cologne, and then ordered several boxes decorated with the same pattern as the shirt that JFK was wearing when they met. Finally, he labeled the bottles and boxes with John's amusing request: “EIGHT & BOB”. Albert soon began receiving requests for the cologne from the Hollywood elite. Unfortunately, the success of his cologne would not spread much further due to a tragic automobile accident in 1939. Philippe, the only person who could handle the orders, would only continue with the work for a few months, since the start of World War II forced him to leave his job with the Fouquet family. In the final shipments, Philippe hid the bottles inside books that he carefully cut by hand to prevent the Nazis from seizing the cologne. Decades later, thanks to the family of Philippe the butler, the formula for “EIGHT & BOB” has been completely recovered, along with its carefully crafted production process. Once again, it has become one of the most exclusive colognes, preferred by the world’s most elegant men.

FLORIS

FLORIS

Luxury perfume house Floris knows history. With a story that stretches back almost 300 years, the English fragrance company has served distinguished clientele from Florence Nightingale, who kindly sent a thank-you for the "sweet-smelling nosegays," to Marilyn Monroe, who ordered Rose Geranium from her room at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Inside the shop at 89 Jermyn Street, antique Spanish mahogany cases display the company's storied past and inherited knack for mixing fragrances that stay classic. Here is No. 127, a lavender-citrus scent that was originally blended in 1890 for the Russian Grand Duke, and, 50 years later, remained a favorite of Winston Churchill and Argentinian First Lady Eva Perón. James Bond preferred No. 89, a woody citrus that he wore in Ian Fleming's novels. The brand's celebrity attraction continues today, though family-run Floris remains discreet on names. Founded in 1730 by Juan Floris, his descendants have run the shop for nine generations at the same address. Until the 1960s, each scent was mixed by hand in the cellars beneath 89 Jermyn Street, though fragrances are now made at a modern factory in Devon. Customers to the shop find a Royal Warrant from King George IV framed on the wall, appointing Floris as the Smooth Pointed Comb Maker to His Majesty. Today, the company is the sole perfumer of Queen Elizabeth II. To celebrate her Diamond Jubilee in 2012, Floris launched Royal Arms Diamond Edition, an updated version of the scent created in honor of the Queen's birth in 1926.

MEMO

MEMO

Clara and John Molloy, the founders of MEMO, met on a chair lift, between sky and earth, between two worlds, in that weightless space that brings out one’s daring side and broadens horizons. It wasn’t long before they decided to set off together on a creative journey. Memo, which they launched in 2007, was part of the adventure: a collection of scents from afar, it takes a destination and makes it the point of departure for a sense-awakening epic. This choice was guided by their past and their convictions: John Molloy grew up in the bracing Irish countryside before traveling the world to discover other cultures and life beyond working leather and the land. A native of Andalusia, Clara Molloy forged her love of accents in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, Catalan pine trees and Swiss mountains. With Alienor Massenet, nose of the brand, they see fragrance as a means of taking a magical journey, extended beyond its end and constantly re-traveled. Fragrance kindles an excitement similar to that of a journey, and for the Molloys, and for MEMO, the journey is the destination.

PHAEDON

PHAEDON

How often is a fragrance house named after a Greek philosopher? Phaedo of Elis was a young man of noble birth forced into slavery in Athens. His mind and beauty so impressed Socrates that he persuaded friends to buy the young man’s freedom, and made him his disciple. Little did Phaedo know that nearly twenty-five centuries later, two Parisian aesthetes with a passion for travel and the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean would perpetuate his memory through scents...
