ETAT LIBRE D'ORANGE

Perfume is dead, long live perfume!...or so declares the irreverent d Etat Libre d'Orange in their Declaration of Independence. The Free State of Orange is a land of olfactory liberty where there are no taboos, or constraints on fragrance creation. Headed up by the mercurial Etienne de Swardt, Etat Libre captured our interest upon its inception in 2006. Who else would dare create a fragrance based on incense and bubble gum, or a hotel madame? Insolence? Perhaps. Subversive? Most definitely, but it is rare to see anyone these days push the envelope so far with a fragrance, much less an entire line. We love the adventurous spirit and unconventional approach and we applaud the results. Les parfums et mort, vive les parfums!

As one of the oldest perfume houses in the world, Guerlain produces some of the finest fragrances with distinctive confection aromas encased in equally distinctive designed perfume bottles. One of its oldest and still most popular women's perfumes is Jicky, said to be the first fragrance to combine both natural and synthetic ingredients, the latter creating its staying power. The latest debut of feminine scents is Insolence, a perfume for the care-free spirit. For men there are notable scents such as Heritage and Velvetier. As a designer influenced by nature, it was natural that James Heeley should be fascinated by the world of scent. It was after meeting Annick Goutal in 1996 that he discovered how scents are ‘designed’. His first scent, ‘Figuier’, is remarkable for it’s precision in evoking the natural scent of a Mediterranean Fig tree. With time and experience, his beautifully constructed, simple and fresh scents evolved into more complex creations such as ‘Cardinal’, ‘Esprit du Tigre’ and ‘Cuir Pleine Fleur’. His continually evolving collection now includes nine contemporary scents made according to the art of traditional French perfumery. Every detail, from the creation of the scent and selection of ingredients, to the recyclable packaging and engraved wooden top is designed ‘in house’. Today, Heeley is one of the few owner-founder, luxury perfume houses in Europe. This independence allows the creative freedom to create individual, quality scents that are quite simply unique.
