We are in 1916 when the Italian baron Carlo Magnani travels the epicentres of culture – Paris, London, New York. And this is the moment when he decides to create a fragrance destined for timeless success: Colonia. Fresh and modern which reflects the expression of Italian gentlemen style. In the 1930s, it became the perfume of the era. In the 1950s, Colonia attained international success, when Hollywood actors, invited to Italy by the great masters of Italian cinema, discovered its intimate and refined notes in the historic bespoke tailors’ shops. The international success of Colonia continued to exert an immutable appeal through years remaining the preferred fragrance of international connoisseurs. It was the first real Italian cologne.

Today, Acqua di Parma is a leading player on the luxury market, thanks to the production of a series of true masterpieces of traditional Italian craftsmanship.

Bulgari, stylized as BVLGARI, is an Italian luxury brand known for its  jewelry, watches, fragrance, accessories and leather goods.

While the majority of design, production and marketing is overseen and executed by Bulgari, the company does, at times, partner with other entities. For example, Bulgari eyewear is produced through a licensing agreement with Luxottica and Bulgari formed a joint  with Marriott International in 2001 to launch its hotel brand, Bulgari Hotels & Resorts, a collection of properties and resort destinations around the world.

Currently part of the LVMH Group, Bulgari was founded in the region of Epirus, Greece, in 1884 by the silversmith Sotirios Boulgaris (Greek: Σωτήριος Βούλγαρης, Italian: Sotirio Bulgari) as a single jewelry shop that has, over the years, become an international brand. The company has evolved into a player in the luxury market, with an established and growing network of stores.

CARTIER

Considered the king of jewelers by Englands Edward VII, the Cartier company was founded in Paris in 1847 by Louis-Franois Cartier where it remained under family control until 1964. Louis was succeeded by his son, Alfred, in 1874. In 1904, Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont happened to mention to told Louis who was still in charge for the company’s Paris branch how difficult it was to use a pocket watch while flying. This inspired Louis to design a flat, easily read wristwatch called the Santos. Louis contracted Swiss-based watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre to supply movements for the companys watches. The Santos was followed by notable pieces such as the 1917 Tank watch. Pierre, Louis-Franois Cartier’s grandson, led Cartier’s global expansion and opened the New York store in 1909. Pierre ran the New York branch until he died in 1972. Investors purchased Cartier Paris, and in 1974 and 1976, bought Cartier London and New York, respectively. They were combined under the name Cartier Monde in 1979. By 2012, ownership of Cartier was held by the Rupert family in South Africa, as well as Pierre’s granddaughter. Cartier has 200 stores in 125 countries. Its products range from fine leather items to watches, fragrances and accessories. It has a base of 65 fragrances. The first, Santos de Cartier, was introduced in 1981. As of 2014, its latest fragrances include La Panthere for women and Declaration L’Eau.

Christian Dior developed a love of fashion when he was just 5 years old. He would sell his fashion sketches outside of his home in France for 10 cents each. Dior designed for multiple large fashion houses in his youth before founding his own in 1946. Wasting no time, he launched Christian Dior Parfumes just one year later. Still a cult classic to this day, Miss Dior was the very first perfume created by the house of Dior. This powerhouse brand has released over 50 fragrances for men and women and show no signs of slowing down. Fragrances are a significant category for D&G. The designers added new scents in the late 1990s to appeal to younger consumers, enhancing their already successful fragrance line. HERMES

In 1974, they launched Amazone perfume. Other fragrances for women include Eau des Merveilles; 24 Faubourg; and Calèche. Hermès also features men’s colognes: Equipage, Bel Ami and Terre D’Hermès. Additionally, Hermès makes fragrances for use by both men and women, including Eau d’Hermès, Un Jardin sur le Nil, and Eau d’Orange Vert. Since 2004, Jean Claude Ellena has been the in-house perfumer for Hermès and is responsible for the development of several new fragrances in the Hermessence collection, including Paprika Brasil perfume for women.

HUGO BOSS

In 1993, 70 years after its founding, Hugo Boss launched their first fragrance, and created a division which has since grown to be an important part of the company. Women’s fragrances include femme by Boss, Boss Intense and Boss Women perfumes. Men’s scents feature the classic Boss Bottles cologne, as well as Boss Soul, Boss in Motion, Boss In Motion Limited Edition and Boss Selection. Another fragrance, called simply, Hugo, targets a younger demographic and features a cologne for men and a perfume for women. Other offerings in the fragrance segment include Del Mar Baldessarini cologne by Hugo Boss, Hugo Dark Blue cologne, and Hugo Deep Red perfume.

Today, the Boss image is represented by four independent and distinctively positioned lines targeting various needs. JEAN PAUL GAULTIER

His first fragrance, Classique, was introduced in 1993, followed by Le Mâle for men two years later. Both were very successful commercially, and led to subsequent scents including the floral women’s perfume Fragile, the unisex “fragrance for humanity” Gaultier² (pronounced Gaultier to the power of two), and the fresh but masculine Fleur du Male.

JOHN VARVATOS

John Varvatos was born in Detroit and later grew up in Allen Park. Michigan. Upon entering the fashion business, he first joined Polo Ralph Lauren in 1983. In 1990, he moved on to Calvin Klein and was appointed the head of menswear design. It was there that he pioneered the boxer brief, a type of men’s underwear that combined both boxers and briefs. Brought to fame by actor Mark Wahlberg in 1992, the boxer brief is largely considered one of the greatest apparel creations in history.

In 1995, Varvatos returned to Ralph Lauren, this time appointed the head of menswear design for all Polo Ralph Lauren brands. He also created the Polo Jeans Company the same year. Varvatos started his own clothing company in 1999 and released his first line the following year. Looking to rock ‘n’ roll as inspiration for his designs, Varvatos has had ad campaigns featuring musicians such as Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper and Dave Matthews.

Months after premiering his first collection, he opened a boutique in Soho. In 2001, he was also licensed to create a high-end line of Converse shoes. His first, self-titled fragrance for men was released in 2004. The company released nine other fragrances between 2006 and 2013. He was awarded the Perry Ellis Award for Menswear in 2000 from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. He was also honored as GQ’s Designer of the Year in 2007.

LACOSTE

Their fragrances for men and women include Inspiration perfume, which captures the essence of feminine freedom with a blend of white florals, sensual woods and enticing musks. Other perfume offerings are Pink and Pour Femme, which is targeted to “audacious women” who are “free spirits who act on impulse.” Men’s colognes are represented by Lacoste Pour Homme, Red, and the newest fragrance, Essential, which features top notes of aquatic citrus, tangerine and bergamot.

MISSONI

As the son of a sea captain and a countess, Ottavio Missoni had the creative dreams on which empires are built. Missoni was born in Yugoslavia in 1921 and became a star athlete. He participated in the 1948 Olympic Games in London, where he met his future wife and partner, Rosita, whose family owned a textile business in northern Italy.

Together, the couple formed the company Missoni in 1953, setting up shop in Gallarate, in Lombardy. Although he previously designed sports suits, he and his wife switched to knitwear dresses with their signature zigzag pattern. Its first collection was presented in Milan in 1958. The company’s popularity grew, and in 1967, the couple was asked to present a collection at the Pitti Palace in Florence. Due to a creative argument, this was Missoni’s only showing at the palace. Its reputation and product line, however, captured the attention of Diana Vreeland, editor of Vogue. Soon after, the Missoni boutique was opened at Bloomingdale’s.

Its first fragrance, Missoni, was introduced in 1982. As of 2014, Ottavio and Rosita’s granddaughter oversees the Missoni fragrance collection, which has a base of 13 scents. The latest are from the Missoni Colori line, released in 2008

Ottavio Missoni died at age 92 in May 2013. Sadly, his eldest son, Vittorio, CEO of the Missoni empire, was reported lost in a plane off the coast of Venezuela in January of the same year.

MONT BLANC

You may think writing instruments and luxury goods have nothing in common, but Montblanc soon broke that barrier. The company began as Simplo Filler Pen in Germany in 1908 under August Eberstein, Alfred Nehemias and Claus-Johannes Voss. The company got the Montblanc name from one of its high-quality pens that was introduced in 1910.

Montblanc is known for its white star symbol that first appeared on its products in 1913. Montblanc created its breakthrough pen in 1924 called the MeisterstŸck, meaning masterpiece in English, and it is made to this day. The company changed its title to Montblanc-Simplo GmbH in 1934 and debuted its piston pen filler product line. The company expanded its product base to include notebooks, pen pouches and writing cases.

Montblanc’s manufacturing centers were destroyed during World War II, but operations continued in Denmark as reconstruction efforts were underway. The company manufactured other items, but Montblanc pens continued in popularity. Montblanc was subsequently bought by Richemont Group, offering Montblanc items and luxury products. Revived interest in fountain pens in the 1980s allowed the company to enter Asia.

Montblanc set up various boutiques in the 1990s and expanded into high-end product lines that included jewelry, watches and cases. Montblanc created a fragrance for women in 2001, titled Presence, and Starwalker for men was introduced in 2005. The Starwalker fragrance debuted alongside the Starwalker pen and Timewalker watch collection. Montblanc fragrances are produced in partnership with Inter Parfums Inc.

PACO RABANNE

Paco Rabanne presented his first fragrance, Calandre, in 1969. Meant for an active woman, it’s a cypress-heavy perfume that was considered revolutionary for its time. In 1973, he introduced his first men’s fragrance, Paco Rabanne pour homme, which was the first aromatic scent on the market. XS Pour Elle was introduced much later in 1995 as a soft floral, followed by his first unisex fragrance, Paco, in 1996, which was presented in a recyclable metal bottle.

Two years later, Paco Energy was created, and a year later, Ultraviolet perfume for women made its debut. The men’s version of Ultraviolet cologne rolled out in 2001. Other noted Paco Rabanne fragrances include Eau De Paco Rabanne Cologne, La Nuit Perfume for Women, Liquid Crystal Perfume, Liquid Metal Cologne, Metal Perfume, Paco Energy Body Lotion, Paco Energy Cologne, Paco Pour Elle, Paco Rabanne Sport, Paco Unisex, and Xs Extreme Girl.
